Be a Diamondback Defender!
Each nesting season, diamondback terrapins are killed or injured by motor vehicles on the Jekyll Island Causeway.
Sadly, the same is true for other roadways crossing salt marsh habitats. The diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin), North America’s only estuarine turtle species, inhabits the brackish waters of coastal salt marshes. Terrapins range from New England to the Gulf of Mexico, with the species currently listed in Georgia as a “Species of Concern.”
Help us fund a $50,000 cooperative Georgia Sea Turtle Center diamondback terrapin conservation, research, management and education program on Jekyll Island. Our goal is to create a roadside management plan to reduce terrapin mortality on Georgia’s causeways and elsewhere. This project will include research and management strategies that will ultimately be a model for other sites and hopefully provide greater protection for the terrapins.
Read more about this fascinating research project and the efforts being made to preserve this charismatic species on our diamondback terrapin web pages.

Conservation in Action!
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is a hospital for sick and injured sea turtles, and is the only hospital of its kind in the state of Georgia. Our facility is open to the public and offers the unique opportunity to witness sea turtle conservation and rehabilitation in action.
Through sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education programs, we are able to care for turtles of all kinds while increasing awareness of habitat and wildlife conservation challenges, promoting responsibility for ecosystem health, and empowering individuals to act locally, regionally, and globally to protect the environment.
Contributions exceeding $250 can be made to our facility through the Jekyll Island Foundation.
